This is a quick opinion blog post. I need to point out that I started creative writing late in life and don’t have a background in the discipline. So am just pointing out something I noticed as a casual observer.

It was inspired by the comedian Jimmy Carr’s recent sample of his writing. Not to put too fine a point on it, it was terrible. Badly written wilfully ignorant gibberish.

The sole purpose seemed to be to publish something that fits into a narrow seam of legal but offensive online material.

The thing is, I know Jimmy Carr can do a hell of a lot better. He is a published author with decades of experience in writing. Which had me wondering, why this shit?

The answer came today in the form of 45 million views of the clip. And it got me thinking of one of the first posts by businessman Elon Musk after he bought the Twitter, now X, social media website. From memory it was a black and white caricature drawing of a wealthy 18th century upper class man looking at the arse of a bent over servant, with a caption referencing some or other technical changes to the website. I think, and I could be wrong, that the implication was that he is so wealthy he could sexually assault staff and get away with it. And that somehow relates to changing the structure of the Twitter website. In any case it was hateful bollox.

The thing is, the employee that posted that did so in the knowledge that it would be seen and approved by management. I’m fully sure they did not put it there in the spirit of artistic expression. It’s hard to imagine that that employee didn’t go home that evening with a little bit of their soul missing.

And that’s the problem. You can’t really fault the creators for churning out dehumanizing muck. Their job is to create, and in the age of international corporations that is what gets promoted.

Anyway, blogging over. As sure as day follows night a counterculture will emerge and reject the narrative promoted by corporations. Or governments/ EU will simply pull the plug.

Either way, nothing lasts forever -even weird billionaire flattering rape jokes.
